Extinction of languages leads to the loss of identity, communication, and rich heritages. Language is an integral part of humanity and national expression that makes up the rich tapestry of our cultural diversity.
In 1952 Bangladesh faced the threat of the extinction of their beautiful language and heritage. On February 21, Bangladeshi college students died to preserve the prerogative to speak their mother tongue, Bengali. Because of the sacrifice of these courageous young people, the Bengali language remains the seventh most spoken language in the world. This day has been commemorated as National Martyr’s Day in Bangladesh since that tragic day. Furthermore in 1999 the United Nations proclaimed February 21st to be International Mother Language Day.
AOB values the culture, language, and literature of Bangladesh. We have Bangladeshi language teachers to guide expatriates in gaining proficiency in language and sensitivity to culture. This enables expatriates to appropriately participate in development work in Bangladesh. Our language teams produce mother tongue literacy through written and audio materials on social awareness, folk stories, poetry, and health booklets. We strive to preserve the language, heritage, and culture of these people groups through these resources and promote social and physical wellness within these communities.
